Students and faculty can donate unwanted books to a book drive benefiting the University of St. Thomas in Mozambique through May 1.

Donations will be sent to the university in Mobuto, Mozambique during the summer and will contribute to an on-campus library. The current library has benefited from donations from both UST and the University of St. Thomas in Canada in two past book drives, which took place in 2003 and 2005. A total of more than 2,000 books were collected in those two drives.

The book drives have been organized by the Rev. Joseph Womala at UST Mozambique, his friend, New York City-based Mozambique citizen Alfredo Mondlhane, and history professor and former UST president Joseph McFadden.

According to McFadden, Mondlhane also collects computers, desks and other equipment to be shipped with the books.

UST Mozambique was formed in 2004 in a government-donated building and offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees. Student enrollment was estimated at 100, but 1,000 students enrolled, and according to McFadden, the university has continued to grow.

"The response has been tremendous," McFadden said. "This University has grown beyond anybody's expectations."

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to bring donations to the history building or directly to McFadden's office. Any type of book is needed, including textbooks.

"They desperately need the books and appreciate every one we send over," McFadden said.

Because of the impending retirement of McFadden and drive-organizer Mondlhane, this is expected to be last collection to benefit UST Mozambique.
