UST alumnus Sgt. Charles "Trey" Kitowski, 31, was killed while fighting in Afghanistan on Aug. 12, 2007.

Kitowski, who was born in Gulfport, Miss., graduated from St. Thomas High School and later received his bachelor's degree in management information systems from UST in 1998. He worked in the finance department of Southwest Airlines in Dallas after college and two years ago, enlisted in the Army.

"Charles died doing what he felt duty bound to do," Kitowski's family said in a statement. "Please remember his life, his happy memories, his favorite expressions or advice he ever offered."

Kitowski was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church, where his funeral services were held on Aug. 18. He also volunteered with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Habitat for Humanity.

Kitowski's long-time friend and former UST classmate Arlene Richard remembered him as a warm and caring individual who was always ready to help others. "He had this great, infectious laugh, and his smile was awesome-just the right mix of mischief and charm," she said. "He was loyal, easy-going and a person you could always count on. He was always there to help, always ready with a smile and a laugh, a great friend and a true gentleman."

Prior to his death, Kitowski was assigned to the 345th Psychological Operations Company, 2nd Psychological Operations Group, U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Kitowski had been in Afghanistan for about a year when an improvised explosive device detonated near his troop's vehicle in the Nangarhar Province. He and two other soldiers from the 2nd Battilion, 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg later died from wounds sustained during that attack.

U.S. Army officials presented various honors to Kitowski's parents at the funeral, including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star as well as a Meritorious Service Metal and Combat Action Badge. Kitowski earned several other awards during his service, including the Marksmanship Qualification Badge and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He is survived by his parents, Chuck and Theresa Kitowski, of Katy.

Family and friends are accepting donations to memorialize Kitowski on campus with a UST chapel paver and a memorial tree. Contributions over this goal will be given to a scholar fund for children of soldiers.
