Welcome, classmates, to the 2007 - 2008 school year at the University of St. Thomas. I am the Student Government Association president, and I would like to offer you a few words of advice.

All of us are paying a substantial amount of money to learn valuable lessons inside the classroom; however, I believe we learn many valuable lessons outside of the classroom, as well. St. Thomas offers everyone many ways to become engaged on campus and become active student leaders.

The SGA provides a forum for student discussion and suggestions on ways to improve the University. There are four student representatives from each class who meet every Tuesday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Find out more information at www.ustsga.com or stop by our office on the second floor of the Crooker Center.

The Student Activities Board plans and organizes the larger events and activities on campus such as Neewollah. Anyone can become involved with SAB by attending planning meetings or events.

The Council of Clubs aids and encourages club development and interaction as well as student participation in social and academic activities. There are more than 30 clubs providing opportunities for student involvement. Stop by the Student Activities office for more information on SAB and COC.

The Sports Clubs Association allows students to participate and compete in sports against other schools in the Houston area. Current clubs include rugby, baseball and volleyball. Students are always encouraged to start a new club. The Sports Clubs office, located in Jerabeck, can provide a full list of sport clubs.

The Graduate Student Association provides career advancement and social networking opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students. Events are normally held in the evening, catering to the schedule that many graduate students face. Contact Anna Shaposhnikova or Pierre Canac for more information.

The Cauldron newspaper, which you are reading, offers a voice for student opinion and comments regarding University and local activities in addition to providing news, feature and entertainment stories geared towards the UST community. Anyone can submit articles for publication by contacting the Cauldron editor or by stopping by the newspaper office in the Guadalupe House.

The Laurels Literary Magazine is published every semester, offering an avenue for writers, poets and artists to publish their work. Students can submit pieces through several submission boxes placed on campus or by contacting the English department.

Campus Ministry serves students of all faiths and facilitates the growth of the spiritual life. Youth leadership in liturgical programs, retreats and Bible studies are some of the opportunities students are encouraged to take advantage of at UST.

The Office of Volunteer Opportunities provides a resource to increase personal growth through community service. OVO offers access to hundreds of volunteer opportunities for individuals and for groups, including one-time events and on-going service. Contact Ellie Collier at ellie@stthom.edu for opportunities to become involved.
