The I Madonnari Art Competition and Festival brought 16 Houston-area high school students to the University campus to compete in a scholarship contest.

The students, who were chosen by their art teachers, each utilized a 3-by-3-foot space to create a work of art with only sidewalk chalk. The artists were allowed to choose any subject matter, as long as it was suitable for public viewing. The contestants were allowed to work from 8 a.m. until 5:15 p.m., when the judging took place. Judges chose three finalists based on creativity, design, composition and technique.

Jessica Flores, Hung Pham and Eric Ruiz each earned a $300 prize and the opportunity to receive a $1000 scholarship to UST if they apply and are accepted. All finalists will compete for a $500 grand prize at the annual Festa Italiana on Oct. 23, which will be held at Houston Farm and Ranch Club.
