The $1.5 million Crooker Center renovation project is underway. Construction began Sept. 5, and while students may notice a few tiles missing, they should not expect the construction to interfere with their access to the dining hall.

"For most of the renovations, students will come and go as they please from the north and south entrances," Manager of Facilities and Operations Don Clayton said. "There will always be at least one entrance open, so it should not affect their daily routine much at all."

The first phase of the renovation project will remodel the Office of Student Activities on the first floor. The faculty and student workers there have temporarily moved to the second floor of Crooker and to the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center.

Other phases of the renovation include remodeling the Counseling and Testing Center, removing the solarium on the north end of the building, and extending both floors of the north end of the building to add more square footage to the Office of Student Affairs.

The glass doors and walls on the north and south ends will be replaced one at a time. A black canopy will be added onto the east side of the building "to tie into the architecture of the other buildings on campus, which will look really nice," Clayton said.

The purpose of the project is to better utilize the space available and to extend the building, as well as to ensure that all of Vice President of Academic Affairs Steve Sutton's programs are housed together, Clayton explained.

Assistant Director of Student Activities Angie Montelango is working out of both Crooker and Jerabeck while the Office of Student Activities is under construction.

Though she admitted that packing up her belongings was a pain, she expressed her excitement and said that the difficulty will be worth it in the long run. "Students and student organizations will benefit by having SGA, COC, and SAB leaders all in one location, as well as being near Campus Ministry," Montelango said.

Construction is expected to be completed this June.
