Sept. 4: The first SGA meeting of the year. Over the summer, three SGA senators resigned: Graduate Senator Brenda Benkenstein, Junior Senator Suzy Garcia and Junior Senator Laure Hamzo. The senate voted to approve Peter Gotting and Sheena Byrne as the new Junior Senators. The open Graduate Senator position was not filled.
Senate Bill #5 was presented by Graduate Senator Cameron Waldner, requesting $960 to fund a Catholic Daughters speaker [as was instituted last year, bills will be presented one week and voted on at the next meeting].
President Josh Gautreau and Vice President Tom Mendez discussed plans for the upcoming year including a Meet the Senator Program and a citywide SGA meeting with different schools in the area. Gautreau also mentioned the blog that SGA launched over the summer. It can be found at www.ustsga.com.
There was a discussion led by Senior Senator Fidencio Leija about a new recycling program that would be presented in bill form the next meeting.
Sept. 11: Graduate Senator Shaula Jimenez resigned her position, leaving two empty Graduate Senator positions. The senate voted to approve Alex Ozburn and Aldo Di Vece to fill the empty spots.
Senate Bill #5 was scrapped, because Catholic Daughters is an organization under Campus Ministry and cannot receive money from SGA unless there are special circumstances.
Senate Bill #6 was presented by Senator Leija, and requested $5,450 in funds to support a new recycling and environmental awareness program. Some senators seemed hesitant to grant such a large amount of money to an unproven program. Also, some of the details that were presented last week had changed. Specifically, the new plan replaced the recycling containers that had been presented the week before with larger and more expensive containers. Unlike the previously proposed containers, the new ones had not been approved by Assistant Vice President of Facilities Operations, Howard Rose. The bill will be voted on at the next meeting, which will be Sept. 25. There was not be a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 16, because of the Volunteer Fair.
