UST art curator and adjunct archaeology professor the Rev. Edward Arthur Bader, 73, died in the early morning of Sept. 16 after a three-year battle with cancer.

Bader helped establish the Friends of Archeology at UST in 1990. When the Chapel of St. Basil was constructed, he transformed the old chapel into the Little Archeological gallery, next to Hughes House. Bader then continued to oversee the exhibits and events held there. He also participated in the establishment of the annual Shiffick Lecture in Archeology.

"The Little Archeology Gallery was very rewarding for him and the people involved," said the Rev. Daniel Callam, a theology professor. "The Friends of Archeology were so faithful to him in visiting him in the hospital. No one that I know can take his place. He was the spirit of [the LAG]."

Bader organized lectures, tours and exhibitions for the Gallery, Callam said. "He worked until the last few months and was active," he said. "But, then it became inevitable for him to stop."

UST facilities operator, Bobby Patterson, said Bader's dedication to the expansion of the LAG encouraged him to continue collecting archeological pieces from around the world. "He brought items from his visits to Egypt, and all around the world," Patterson said.

Patterson worked with Bader whenever the LAG needed small maintenance repairs or needed help moving things around. "He was a nice guy, very outspoken and an adventurous person," he said. "He had a kind word to say to people and was generally concerned with the family."

Bader was born to Edward Joseph Bader and Anita Marie Krause, in Detroit, Mich. On March 23, 1934. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in Detroit.

Bader earned a bachelor of arts in history from Assumption University in Windsor, Ontario and a master of arts from the University of Michigan.

He entered the novitiate of the Basilian fathers in Rochester, New York in 1952. He made his profession of vows on Aug. 13, 1953 and joined the University 24 years later in 1987.

Bader was buried Sept. 21 in Forest Park Lawndale after a funeral Mass at St. Anne's Catholic Church. A prayer vigil was also held in his honor on Sept. 20.
