A new campus organization, the 7 a.m. Runners and Walkers of UST, hopes to provide college students with a safe and fun way to healthier living. Real Education About College Health educators and sophomore mathematics major Shawna Boothe began the club this semester to help students become more active in a more social and enjoyable way.

Meeting at 7 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays outside of Jerabeck, students run two miles around campus and then finish with abdominal exercises. Those who cannot run the entire distance can walk it, and people may bring pets on the run if desired. The group has been meeting for approximately three weeks now, and three to 12 students generally meet to run, depending on the day.

"This group helps offer a safe run outdoors for students, with the idea of safety in numbers," said Coordinator of Health Promotion and Wellness Amanda Alvey. "Also, it provides a fun group to work out with by making exercise more social and entertaining. People fearing the 'freshman 15' now have greater motivation to move towards healthier living by working out with friends."

Students with questions can reach Alvey at (713) 525-3515. More information is also available from the organization's Facebook group.
