Sept. 25: The new senators were sworn in, including the replacements for the vacant senior and junior positions and the new freshman senators. Discussion of Senate Bill 6 dominated the meeting. SB 6 is the recycling bill that Senator Leija presented at the Sept. 11 meeting. There were multiple plans presented, each with different arrangements and budgets.

The original bill asked for $5,450 in funds, which would go to the cost of buying recycling bins and paying the recycling coordinator. One plan had recycling bins that were cheaper and had been approved by the administration, while another plan had a three-bin package that would make recyclables easier to sort but was more expensive and had not been approved.

A motion to lower the funding amount to $2,500 failed and Leija, as the original bill writer, was allowed to change the amount to $3,000. Finally, the bill was tabled until the next meeting.

Oct 2: UST President Robert Ivany was present for the first half of the meeting and led a Q&A session with the senators. Issues raised were the better implementation of foreign language courses, the availability of campus maps, future construction plans and the feasibility of a new bar on campus. Ivany then spoke about the University's focus on admissions and retention, and asked if the senators had any ideas. Things mentioned were increasing scholarships with tuition increases, creating more school spirit, giving more credit for IB and AP courses and building a bar.

After a fire-alarm break, Vice President of Facilities Operations Howard Rose spoke to the group about the recycling bill. He explained why one set of bins had been approved by the University and the other set had not. Eventually, the senators resumed discussion of SB 6, and a new plan was presented. The final amount that was presented was $2,606. The bill passed by a vote of 17-1.
