After being held at the Link Lee Mansion for more than five years, Neewollah will now settle into a new home at Crooker Center Patio. Construction on the Edward P. White Memorial Plaza forced the Student Activity Board to temporarily change the location to Crooker Patio last year. However, upon completion of the plaza, liability issues prompted SAB to make the change to Crooker permanent.
"From a security standpoint, it is safer, secure, and generally better at Crooker," Angie Montelongo, assistant director of student activities, said.
Neewollah, "Halloween" spelled backwards, has been a UST tradition for more than 50 years and is arguably one of the most heavily attended events of the academic year. Last year, more than 600 people attended and participated in such events as a costume and dance contest. Neewollah, however, is not unaccustomed to relocation. It was originally held in the Jerebeck gym, and then moved to the Scanlan building. It moved once again to Crooker Patio, then to Link Lee Mansion and now back to Crooker.
Some underclassmen students, like sophomore philosophy major Noel Rodriguez, said the change is disappointing.
"The idea of having Neewollah at a mansion lends itself to the holiday more," Rodriquez said. "Last year's event at Crooker felt like a big open spot with a crowd of people. I never got a chance to go to Neewollah at Link Lee, but I heard from many people that it was a lot better."
