Q: What kind of work do you do?
A: I build stuff, I make conceptual projects, I work in all kinds of media. I do work two-dimensionally sometimes, not so much with paint these days.
Q: Do you have a favorite medium?
A: I don't think so…I'll think of a project and whatever it takes to build that-it can be built out of anything. A lot of my ideas take the form of built objects, constructed objects.
Q: How did you get started?
A: As a kid I always drew and received attention for that. In high school, at some point, it was a way to impress the adults around me. I started getting the attention of one of the teachers from a different high school… and he was interested in some sculptural things I was making.
Q: Can you describe one of your favorite pieces?
A: I spent a long time working with "I Love You Baby," a collective. That was enjoyable, but very different from my personal work. Some of the projects I made when I worked at the law library, I look on fondly.
Q: Could you tell me about the "I Love You Baby" collective?
A: A group of artists, five of us…met every Wednesday night and painted, mostly, but sometimes we did other things. It usually involved lots of drinking. We did all sorts of projects and we would record every Wednesday with pictures usually, sometime video. Each Wednesday for the last several years, there's an entry on this website-photos of the night, of paintings while they're in progress. It's kind of a free-for-all.
Q: What's your inspiration?
A: I'm inspired by the world around me. I find inspiration in all kinds of things. I like to think about how things work; I'm inspired by systems and mechanics.
Q: What's next for you?
A: I've moved into a new building, with two architecture students. There are four guys who run the space. They have 12,000 square feet, that's a lot of space. They've so far invited me and one architecture professor from UH. So, it's two artists and two architecture students and they're interested in collaborating, working on projects together. I've moved all my stuff over there, and I'm pretty excited about the potential that could come out of there.
