In a Dec. 13 email to the UST faculty, Andrews, 67, said that he had asked and been granted permission by the Basilian Fathers to retire. He added that he had decided to retire in order to resign his position to new Associate Dean of Education Robert LeBlanc.
Jill Calzada, education department administrative assistant, said that she enjoyed working with Andrews and that he will be deeply missed by the department.
"He was a good person to work for, a nice person that was always willing to lend an ear," she said. "Even though he had a reputation for being tough, I think students really liked him."
Ruth Strudler, dean of the school of education, agreed, saying she will also thoroughly miss him.
"He was the moral compass of the school of education," she said. "He was a wonderful partner and colleague."
Calzada added, jokingly, that it was always up to her to make him coffee. "No matter how busy I was, if he wanted coffee and the pot was empty, he expected me to make it," she said.
Andrews was honored at a retirement reception on Jan. 16.
Andrews was appointed to the O'Connor House in Windsor, Ontario, and will assume his responsibilities there after Jan. 26.
Strudler plans to retire from her deanship in June 2008.
