Students interested in studying Irish language and culture may be eligible for a scholarship provided by the Irish government. Applicants are given the opportunity to receive $500 towards tuition for an Irish language and culture class and $250 for books, which are directly ordered from Ireland for all courses.

"When you get a scholarship, you are able to start your exploration into the Irish culture without having to feel the burden of the cost," sophomore psychology major Nicole Walker said. "It is a way to test the waters to see if you can find a spot for yourself in the Irish world, and gives you a kick step into finding more answers to all of your questions."

The Irish studies program offers several events that introduce traditional musical performances and lectures by individuals from Ireland. Providing financial aid to those who are interested in Ireland's aspects is one of the ways that the Irish Studies program hopes to get more people involved.

"I believe more students would participate in the program if they knew about it," Center for Irish Studies Director Lori Gallagher said. "We need help making students aware of the Irish Studies program and the Irish language scholarships. We welcome other opportunities to spread the word to students."

The University was one of four schools selected by the Irish government to receive funding for Irish language programs, which puts UST in the company of such elite schools as Notre Dame, New York University and Boston College.

Applications call for students' basic information of the student and any financial aid presently received along with an explanation for interest in the program. Scholarships are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis and applications may be returned to the Center for Irish Studies.
