Issue date: 1/29/08 Section: Senate Update
Jan. 22: During the first meeting of the spring semester, junior senator Jorge Bassante volunteered and was selected as the second student appointment to the Publications Committee, joining sophomore senator Michelle Gautreau. Originally planned for the week of Jan. 21-25, the cleaning of the University crest was moved to the following week, likely to be Jan. 31.
A short discussion about the upcoming student elections was held. The candidate filing deadline is on Feb. 8 at noon, and the polls will be open Feb. 18-19. A candidates' debate will be held in the old bookstore on Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. The debate will include speeches by the candidates as well as a question-and-answer session for the Student Government Association presidential candidates. The results of the elections will be announced on Feb. 26.
Each senator then spoke about what personal projects they were currently working on. All were given a deadline of no more than five weeks, at which time they will be expected to give an update on their project to the Senate. Some of the projects mentioned were increasing athletic scholarships, forming a more extensive student ambassador program, writing a student honor code and creating a tuition cap.
No legislation was presented or passed. The current agency total is $13,754.46 and the subledger stands at $19,076.30.
